After a three-year hiatus due to pandemic precautions, the Easterseals Arkansas Board of Directors opened its annual meeting to the public in a virtual setting. The meeting not only marked a symbolic reconnection with supporters but also showcased the organization’s resilience and commitment to its mission.
The highlight of the event was the unveiling of the annual impact report, a testament to Easterseals Arkansas’ unwavering dedication to creating positive change in the lives of individuals with disabilities. This comprehensive report is readily available for review on our website, providing transparency and insight into the organization’s accomplishments.
The board announced the election of new officers, the re-election of returning directors, and the addition of a distinguished new member, Leon Jones Jr. An esteemed attorney from Little Rock. Jones brings a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to community service. Born and raised in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, he holds a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff and a J.D. from the University of Arkansas School of Law in Fayetteville.
Jones’ diverse career includes roles in education, business,
and public service, making him a valuable asset to the Easterseals Arkansas Board of Directors. In addition to his legal expertise, Jones has a proven track record of community engagement, having served on the boards of the Arkansas Fair Housing Commission, the Arkansas Housing Trust Fund, and the Fayetteville Housing Authority. His involvement as the minority outreach coordinator in the 2014 campaign for Asa Hutchinson further underscores his commitment to fostering inclusivity and equity.
The meeting was not only about welcoming new leadership but also acknowledging the invaluable support received from key legislators. The board recognized and expressed gratitude to Rep. Sonia Eubanks Barker, Rep. Keith Brooks, Sen. Breanne Davis, Sen. Jonathan Dismang, and Sen. Ben Gilmore for their instrumental roles in amending the LEARNS Act and the PIAK Act. These amendments ensure that families with students facing special needs and financial hardships can now afford to attend private schools, including the esteemed Easterseals Academy.
In a heartfelt tribute, the Easterseals Arkansas Board named the annual volunteer awards after Breda Turner, the long-time Volunteer Coordinator whose dedication and passion have left an indelible mark on the organization.
The Easterseals Arkansas community is invigorated by this year’s annual meeting. As the organization continues its mission to empower individuals with disabilities, the newly elected leadership and legislative champions pave the way for a future of inclusivity, opportunity, and positive change.
