Meet Jessica: Chef-in-Training, Cat Mom, and Creative Spirit
At 32 years old, Jessica Bona is living a life full of creativity, learning, and independence. A proud resident of Wilson Court HUD apartments, she shares her home with her black cat, Salem, and surrounds herself with the things she loves: scrapbooking, cooking, and spending quality time with friends and family.
“I love scrapbooking and I love to make things for people,” Jessica says. “Cooking is another way I express myself and care for others. That’s why I’m in culinary school.”
When she’s not preparing new recipes, Jessica enjoys doing puzzles, listening to music, and engaging in the CTW activities that help her feel connected and fulfilled.
Her independent lifestyle is a testament to how far she’s come — and how far she’s ready to go next.
Discovering Easterseals: A Mother’s Suggestion, A Life-Changing Path
Jessica first learned about Easterseals Arkansas thanks to a suggestion from her mother, who was looking for ways to help her daughter stay active and engaged. The decision to check out Easterseals quickly turned into a transformative experience.
“My mom didn’t want me to be bored, so she suggested Easterseals,” Jessica recalls. “We were referred there, and I got to shadow with Mrs. Brenda at the Center for Training and Wellness. I fell in love immediately.”
Jessica began regularly attending the Center for Training and Wellness (CTW), participating in its many clubs, workshops, and skill-building opportunities. Over the years, her engagement at CTW not only helped her grow socially but also provided the foundation for her next big step: going back to school.
The CTW Experience: Skills, Support, and Self-Belief
Jessica has been connected to CTW for over five years, and the experiences she’s had there have shaped her life in profound ways. The CTW is more than just a program — it’s a community.
“My favorite thing about Easterseals is the activities that CTW does on Fridays,” she says. “I love the different clubs, evening events, and especially the Cooking Matters classes. They were a lot of fun and helped me feel more confident in the kitchen.”
When she’s not attending school, Jessica still comes to CTW on Fridays and during school breaks, staying involved and continually growing. Whether she’s participating in cooking classes, learning life skills, or spending time with peers, Jessica says CTW helped her gain the confidence to become independent — and the belief that she could do even more.
Pursuing Her Dreams at PT3D Culinary School
Jessica’s journey to Pulaski Tech’s PT3D Culinary School began thanks to an Easterseals partnership that introduced her to the program. Inspired by the opportunity and supported by the team at Easterseals, Jessica applied — and was accepted.
“Shelley told me all about the PT3D program,” Jessica says. “I never imagined going back to school before, but she got me so excited about it. Now I’m working toward a degree, and I feel so proud.”
Recently, Jessica received the Independent Living Skills Award at PT3D, recognizing her initiative and independence in applying real-world skills she learned through CTW and Easterseals.
“It means a lot because I was the only one in my class who showed how I used my skills at home,” she says. “It shows how far I’ve come.”
The Power of People: Mentors Who Inspire
Throughout her journey, one Easterseals staff member stands out as a source of encouragement: Mrs. Susan Tillemans, the art teacher at CTW.
“She helped me fill out the PT3D application and always told me to believe in myself,” Jessica shares. “She listens, she understands, and I know I can always go to her if I have a problem. That kind of support means everything.”
With mentors like Mrs. Tillemans and a team of caring staff at her side, Jessica has grown more confident, capable, and ready to take on the world — one step (and one recipe) at a time.
Center for Training and Wellness: A Pathway to Success
The Center for Training and Wellness (CTW) at Easterseals Arkansas is more than just a program — it’s a nurturing environment designed to empower individuals to achieve their fullest potential.
Jessica stands as a testament to this success. With Easterseals’ comprehensive support — including housing assistance, job-readiness programs, and educational partnerships — she has acquired the tools to live independently and pursue a career in the culinary field.
“Easterseals helped me realize I can do this,” Jessica shares. “They gave me the confidence to think about getting a job and living on my own.”

Looking Ahead: Goals and Gratitude
With graduation on the horizon, Jessica’s next goal is clear: land and keep a job in the culinary field. She’s also excited for the personal milestones ahead — like becoming an aunt and continuing to grow in her independence.
“After I graduate PT3D, I want to work, keep improving, and keep living independently. I want to show myself — and others — that I can do it.”
Jessica’s story is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when individuals are supported with the right tools, environment, and encouragement.
A Message from Jessica: “You’ll Get the Help You Need”
When asked what she would say to someone considering Easterseals, Jessica’s response is full of warmth and wisdom:
“Definitely do it. You’ll make friends, get out of your comfort zone, and get all the support and help you need. You might live on your own, get a degree, or achieve something you never thought possible. Easterseals will help you every step of the way.”
