At Easterseals Arkansas, we’re proud to highlight the incredible educators and leaders who make our mission possible every day. This month, we’re spotlighting Jolie Whitley, a passionate advocate and leader in special education whose role at The Academy is helping shape brighter futures for students with disabilities.
Jolie brings a rare combination of experience, vision, and heartfelt dedication to her work. Known for her ability to break down complex systems, foster collaboration, and build inclusive environments, she has spent her career making sure every student gets the support they deserve. Her story is one of purpose, resilience, and a deep belief that all students can thrive when given the right tools and opportunities.
Finding Her Calling: Jolie’s Path to Easterseals
Jolie’s connection to special education began long before her professional career. Even as a child, she felt drawn to supporting classmates with disabilities. That early spark grew into a lifelong passion—and eventually a career dedicated to creating inclusive learning environments.
“I joined Easterseals because of its commitment to serving individuals with disabilities and supporting inclusive communities,” Jolie shares. “I wanted to contribute my expertise in special education leadership to an organization that shares my dedication to improving the lives of those we serve.”
Since 2009, Jolie has worked in special education, stepping into leadership roles in 2016. She brings not only years of classroom experience but also a clear vision for how to build strong, effective programs that truly serve students and families.
Building Systems, Building Confidence
Jolie holds multiple degrees and certifications that reflect both her academic excellence and her passion for education:
- Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education (P–4), Arkansas Tech University (Honors)
- Master of Education in Special Education: Birth–Grade 4, Arkansas Tech University (Honors)
- Special Education Director Program of Study, Arkansas State University
- Certified Green Classroom Professional, Center for Green Schools
She’s also completed professional development in leadership, literacy, UDL (Universal Design for Learning), and environmental education—always looking for new ways to strengthen her practice and impact.
Professionally, Jolie is known for her knack for designing professional development that is engaging and relevant, while also creating systems that ensure clarity, consistency, and quality in services. Colleagues and families alike describe her as approachable, thorough, and committed to making sure every student feels seen, supported, and empowered.
“I’m best at breaking down complex processes and making them understandable for both staff and families,” she explains. “I strive to create a safe space for everyone to be authentically themselves.”
Passion for Inclusion and the Outdoors
Jolie’s work is fueled by her passion for inclusive education and sustainability in schools. She has been recognized nationally and locally for her contributions, including the 2019 USGBC Arkansas Green Tie Award (Kurrus Educator of the Year) and the 2015 Presidential Innovative Award for Environmental Educators (EPA). She has also earned multiple grants for environmental projects, led recycling programs, and mentored other educators through the Arkansas Green School Challenge.
Her love for nature runs deep—something she credits to her father, an Eagle Scout who taught her to always “leave everything better than you found it.” Whether she’s building flowerbeds, spending time at the lake, or simply enjoying fresh air, Jolie finds energy and inspiration in the outdoors.
Outside of work, she loves traveling with her significant other and their two pets, exploring amusement parks, going on road trips, or camping on weekends. At home, you might also find her working on creative projects, tending to her houseplants, or listening to her record collection—with a cup of coffee and a piece of dark chocolate nearby.
A Legacy of Positivity
Jolie’s colleagues know her as someone who brings passion and enthusiasm into everything she does. But her hopes for her legacy go even deeper.
“I want to be remembered as kind, understanding, and a beacon of positivity for others,” she reflects. “I hope to be remembered for championing inclusion, inspiring others, and leaving behind systems that continue to support students long after I’m gone.”
And while she treasures her plants, chocolate, and music, there’s one thing she knows she could never give up:
“Making a difference in the lives of students with disabilities—it’s at the core of who I am and what I do.”
