Trey Schultz, now a thriving 34-year-old airline pilot based in San Antonio, Texas, had his life transformed by the steadfast support of his parents and the dedicated team at Easterseals Arkansas during his childhood.
Early Challenges and a Diagnosis
Trey’s journey began in Austin, Texas, but his family relocated to Little Rock in the 1980s. They were deeply concerned about Trey’s health and sought out developmental therapy programs. Their search led them to Easterseals, where Trey, at the tender age of four, embarked on a remarkable journey of self-discovery and physical achievement.
Trey’s early days were marked by uncertainty. He spent his first days in the NICU following a grueling nine-hour labor, with no diagnosis in sight. It was only six months later that he was diagnosed with arthrogryposis, a non-progressive disorder that had replaced many of his muscles with fatty tissues. The prognosis was uncertain, and doctors held out hope that corrective surgery might enable him to walk someday.
Despite receiving physical therapy from infancy and undergoing corrective surgery, Trey struggled to bear weight on his legs. Everyday activities like playing with toys were a challenge, but Trey’s determination shone through as he scooted along on his bottom, undeterred by his physical limitations.
Easterseals: A Catalyst for Transformation
Trey’s preschool days at Easterseals were filled with joyful moments. He was a popular figure among his classmates and possessed an innate ability to connect with people.
In a 1989 newsletter, Trey’s mother acknowledged the invaluable role Easterseals played in his development: “The social and educational skills Trey developed at Easterseals Preschool prepared him for the regular preschool he now attends. Without a doubt, the administrators and therapists at Easter Seals far surpass any with which we had previously worked.”
A Childhood Fueled by Dreams
Despite his physical challenges, Trey’s love for sports and his zest for life knew no bounds. He approached life with enthusiasm, even though he didn’t take his first steps until the age of three. His youth was filled with typical adolescent activities, including sports and playing the guitar.
Trey credits the therapy he received at Easterseals, coupled with a nurturing home environment, for the strides he made. He cherishes memories of his Easterseals classroom experiences and participating in the holiday lights ceremony at the state Capitol.
Life Beyond Easterseals
Trey’s condition continues to impact his joints, particularly his hips, as he explains, “My hips remain tighter than those of the average person.”
After his time at Easterseals, Trey’s journey took him to El Dorado. There, he pursued higher education at the University of Louisiana at Monroe and subsequently worked as a flight instructor in Fayetteville.
Trey’s passion for aviation traces back to a defining moment when a doctor at Vanderbilt University gave him a toy airplane. “That’s my first memory of a plane, and I just continued to really be drawn to planes from then on,” Trey recalls. This early fascination paved the way for his remarkable career as an airline pilot.
Reflecting on his journey, Trey emphasizes the importance of pushing beyond personal limitations. He shares a powerful message: “Don’t be scared about trying something new. If you really work at something, it allows you to accomplish more than you think you can.”
Easterseals’ Lasting Impact
The positive impact of Easterseals on Trey’s life endures. As Trey himself puts it, “I learned I could accomplish anything as I saw myself progressing. And my time here helped me interact more at other schools down the road. I learned the basics of setting goals and accomplishing them. If you want to do something, try to do it. Everyone has limitations, but half the battle is just setting a goal and going for it.”
