Living Arrangements & Daily Activities
How are rent and utilities handled?
The individual must pay rent and utilities each month by the specified due date.
Who is responsible for grocery shopping?
Residents have the option to share groceries or purchase them individually. If needed, our staff can assist in grocery shopping based on the individual’s care plan.
What about cooking and cleaning?
Our staff can lend a hand with cooking and help maintain house cleanliness. However, individuals must keep their rooms and shared spaces clean. Specific goals related to cooking and cleaning should be outlined in individual plans.
How do individuals get to work or day programs?
Non-Medicaid transportation facilitates the commute to day programs, like the Center for Training and Wellness. Those employed can buy Links passes for transportation or may receive a ride from staff, provided it’s addressed in their Treatment Plan.
What about medical appointments?
Depending on their plan of care, staff might offer transport to medical appointments, but must remain off-the-clock during the doctor’s consultation.
Financial & Home Responsibilities
Who manages individual finances?
Each resident is tasked with managing their own finances. However, staff can provide support in money management. It’s recommended that individuals have a money management goal and a secure place, like a lock box, for their funds.
What furniture should we bring when moving in?
Individuals should bring their own bedroom and bathroom furniture and items. Easterseals will help furnish the shared spaces, and family contributions to these spaces are welcome.
What if the designated staff doesn’t report for duty?
In the rare case of staff absence, we prioritize calling other house staff for shift coverage. We’re also working towards having on-call staff to handle emergencies or staff no-shows.
Who’s in charge of home maintenance such as yard, HVAC, and plumbing?
The responsibility typically rests with the landlord or owner, based on the lease agreement.
Planning & Transition Support
What are the financial implications if someone moves out?
Upon an individual’s departure, they take their Social Security check with them. Families should anticipate and plan for the halt in this monthly revenue.
What kind of support can families offer?
During planning, it’s beneficial to detail the support a family can provide, be it emergency stays, holidays, financial aid, or more.
Can residents plan home visits?
Absolutely. Going home for a night or more can sometimes ease the transition process.
How are medical considerations handled?
Each person will have a detailed emergency plan as part of their care strategy, addressing medical appointments, medications, and other information.
What if I’m interested but need more time to be ready?
That’s perfectly alright. Transitioning is a process, and it’s essential to feel comfortable. We encourage you to ask questions, stay connected, and even engage with other families who’ve undergone similar experiences. Set new goals in your Individualized Treatment Plan to boost your readiness for independent living.
