Donminick O’Gwin Finds His Fit in Easterseals Arkansas' Phase 2 Program
At Easterseals Arkansas, every individual is seen, valued, and supported for who they are and who they’re becoming. For 20-year-old Donminick O’Gwin, that support has made all the difference. A joyful and vibrant young adult with autism and severe echolalia, Donminick is thriving in a space where he feels understood, supported, and empowered—thanks to the Phase 2 Young Adult Program.
Finding the Right Fit After High School
Like many families navigating the transition to adulthood with a loved one who has autism, Donminick’s mother, Terecia, had concerns about what would come next after graduation. Fortunately, through connections in the autism community and guidance from CTW, she found the Easterseals Phase 2 Program—a structured, small-group setting specifically designed for young adults who need extra support as they build life skills and independence.
“My son has always been caught between being too low-functioning for this and too high-functioning for that,” Terecia shared. “We find that ES Phase 2 is a better fit for him.”
A Safe Place to Grow
The Phase 2 program offers more than just daily structure—it provides Donminick with a welcoming, educational environment where he can grow at his own pace. With the help of compassionate instructors like Alison Miller and Kiara Ray, he’s improving his vocabulary, identifying emotions more clearly, and building social connections.
“They are our guardian angels,” said Terecia. “My son loves them. He comes home and tells his grandparents about them all the time.”
Donminick’s days are filled with engaging activities tailored to his needs, whether it’s singing karaoke, playing classic games like Simon Says, or participating in creative sensory-based learning opportunities. The small group format means he gets plenty of one-on-one time, and the instructors work closely with Terecia to align goals and continue progress at home.
Real Progress, Real Connection
Since joining Easterseals, Donminick has made significant strides. He’s developed stronger language skills, shown growth in his social development, and gained confidence in expressing himself. The instructors even help him work through sensory challenges, like trying new foods—something that once seemed out of reach.
“They are patient with both of us. I trust that they will keep him safe and help push him out of his comfort zone as best they can.”
And the growth doesn’t stop there. Easterseals is already helping the family explore future possibilities, including the Roommate Housing Program, which could give Donminick the opportunity to live more independently with assistance.
Looking to the Future with Confidence
Terecia’s hope for her son is clear: to continue improving his social skills and becoming more independent. And with Easterseals by their side, that dream feels closer than ever.
“Easterseals Phase 2 has been extremely positive and helpful for my son and his needs.”
