At Easterseals Arkansas, we hear countless stories of strength, growth, and overcoming challenges. Today, we are proud to share Haven McCormack’s story, a true example of determination, perseverance, and the incredible impact of early intervention. Haven’s path has not been easy, but with the dedicated support of Easterseals Arkansas, she continues to thrive.
Haven’s Story: Overcoming Heart Surgery and Building Independence
When Haven was born, her parents, Deana and John McCormack, felt joy and hope. However, that quickly turned into concern when doctors discovered a congenital heart defect. Within hours, Haven was transferred to Children’s Hospital, where she had open-heart surgery at just 12 days old. Tragically, during surgery, Haven stopped breathing, and doctors performed CPR for 58 minutes on her tiny body.
This trauma caused brain damage, resulting in cerebral palsy that affected Haven’s motor skills. Despite the challenges, Haven’s parents stayed focused on her recovery. After five and a half weeks in the hospital, they brought Haven home, and by her one-year checkup, doctors suggested they explore Easterseals for therapy.
Easterseals Arkansas: Helping Children Like Haven Reach Their Full Potential
Initially hesitant, Deana and John followed the doctor’s advice and began therapy with Easterseals Arkansas. Through the programs for children, Haven received the care and support she needed to make incredible progress. She started with occupational and physical therapy, and by August of the same year, Easterseals introduced more specialized therapies to address the challenges caused by cerebral palsy.
Thanks to Easterseals Arkansas, Haven has surpassed expectations. Doctors once told her parents she might never walk or talk. Today, Haven is walking and steadily working toward greater independence every day. Easterseals has become a constant source of support in her life, helping her navigate each milestone, from school to social settings. She is now a college student at the University of Central Arkansas and living on campus.

As Haven continues to grow, Easterseals remains by her side. They’ve worked with her at every school she’s attended—from Full Bright to Pinnacle View and Mount St. Mary’s—ensuring she receives the support needed to thrive academically and socially. Deana and John view Easterseals not just as a therapy provider, but as a lifelong partner. They’ve seen how the staff goes beyond expectations to ensure Haven’s success. The therapists’ dedication, kindness, and commitment have made a lasting impact on their family.
