A Heart for Communication, A Life of Impact
For Alexa Reynolds, being a Speech-Language Pathologist is more than a career—it’s a calling. Since 2019, Alexa has been using her specialized skills to help young children build meaningful communication skills at Easterseals Arkansas. She currently works in the Little Rock Developmental Preschool, where her days are filled with play, progress, and purpose.
After earning her Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology from UAMS, Alexa jumped into the field with a deep desire to make a difference. Now, with six years of experience under her belt, she continues to bring that same passion into every session.
“I love working with children who appear to be in their ‘own world,’” she says. “It’s an incredible feeling to build a bridge to them through their special interests and watch real communication start to take shape.”
Her journey started in Bryant, Arkansas, where she grew up and eventually returned for graduate school. Alexa attended the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, majoring in Communication Disorders and minoring in Human Development and Family Sciences. Her educational path prepared her for the dynamic, child-focused work she does today.
Building Trust, One Connection at a Time
Alexa is known for her ability to create authentic connections with the children she serves. Whether she’s supporting a child with nonverbal communication or helping another find their first words, her approach is always rooted in empathy and flexibility.
“No two days are ever the same,” she explains. “Some days, a child is ready to engage right away. Other days, they need more support, and that’s okay. My job is to meet them exactly where they are.”
She’s particularly passionate about working with children who struggle to connect with others. Alexa has a gift for seeing the potential in every child and using their special interests as a launching pad for learning. She is also drawn to childhood apraxia of speech and Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), both of which are vital tools in helping children develop their communication skills.
Families and coworkers alike would describe Alexa as a patient listener, a careful observer, and someone who creates a safe space for children to grow. The results? Children who not only find their voice but thrive in the process.
The Power of Preschool Intervention
At the Little Rock Developmental Preschool, Alexa works as part of a dedicated interdisciplinary team that includes educators, therapists, and behavioral specialists. Together, they provide comprehensive services for children with developmental delays or disabilities, helping them reach critical milestones in communication, socialization, and independence.
“I chose Easterseals because its mission aligned perfectly with why I became a speech-language pathologist in the first place,” Alexa shares. “It’s about empowering individuals with disabilities at every phase of life, and I’m so thankful to be a small part of that mission.”
The preschool is a vital part of Easterseals’ broader mission to serve children and families across Arkansas. From the youngest infants to school-age children, the program is tailored to meet each child’s unique needs and prepare them for long-term success.
Alexa’s daily work reflects this commitment. She doesn’t just teach skills—she opens doors. Whether through verbal speech, sign language, or AAC devices, she helps children express themselves and connect with the world around them.
More Than a Therapist
Outside the classroom, Alexa is just as passionate about building community and spreading joy. She currently serves on the board of the Arkansas Down Syndrome Association, where she helps organize awareness events and provides resources for families. Her volunteer work mirrors her professional values: advocacy, inclusion, and celebration of every individual's potential.
When she’s not working or volunteering, Alexa loves being outdoors, traveling, and hanging out with her two dogs. She enjoys fitness, reading, and starting the day with breakfast at Blue House in Bryant or Buttered Biscuit in West Little Rock—always with a latte in hand.
And here’s a fun fact: she’s a die-hard You’ve Got Mail fan. “I’ve probably seen it over 100 times. If it’s playing in another room, I can tell you exactly what’s happening in that scene,” she laughs.
