At Easterseals Arkansas, we believe that every child deserves the opportunity to thrive, grow, and feel seen. That belief is lived out every day by the passionate educators who work across our programs. One of those educators is Alexius Hervey, a dedicated and joyful force at our Little Rock Developmental Preschool. For nearly five years, Alexius has been pouring her heart into the lives of her students—and the impact she’s made is immeasurable.
With patience, creativity, and compassion, Alexius helps create a nurturing environment where young children with developmental delays or special needs are supported and celebrated for exactly who they are. Her classroom isn’t just a place of learning—it’s a place where milestones are met, personalities shine, and every child is given the tools they need to succeed.
“I started working at Easterseals because I’ve always had a passion for helping children, especially those who need a little extra support,” Alexius shares. “When I learned about the work Easterseals does, I felt instantly connected to the mission. I wanted to be part of a team that not only cares for children but truly believes in their potential.”
A Lifelong Learner with a Heart for Service
Alexius’s path to Easterseals Arkansas began in her hometown of El Dorado, Arkansas. When she was nine, her family moved to Little Rock—a transition that would eventually root her in the community she now serves.
Her academic journey has been as intentional as her heart for service. She began her higher education at the University of Arkansas at Pulaski Technical College, earning an Associate of Science in Liberal Arts & Sciences, before going on to complete a Master of Science in Psychology at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. But her journey didn’t stop there—Alexius is currently pursuing her second master’s degree in Special Education through Western Governors University to continue growing as a teacher and advocate.
“I want to be as equipped as possible to support the kids I work with. Every child is unique, and I want to make sure I’m giving them what they need to thrive.”
Her impressive list of certifications includes training in managing ADHD, autism, learning disabilities, asthma, diabetes, and seizures. She’s also certified in CPR, First Aid, and Mental Health First Aid, and is currently completing her Certified Childcare Professional credential.
This commitment to lifelong learning reflects her belief that education is a tool for empowerment—not just for herself, but for every child she works with.
Teaching with Heart: Inside the Classroom
Alexius has a gift for seeing the world through a child’s eyes. In her classroom, learning is fun, supportive, and often tailored to each student’s needs. Whether it’s through sensory play, music, structured routines, or simply sitting with a child who’s having a hard day, she meets each moment with empathy and intention.
“Professionally, I’m known for being patient, creative, and deeply compassionate,” she says. “I have a natural knack for building strong, trusting relationships with my students and helping them feel safe, supported, and confident.”
One of Alexius’s greatest strengths is helping children who are struggling to communicate or regulate big emotions. She breaks learning and behavior goals down into small, achievable steps—always cheering her students on through each victory.
“The one problem I’m best at solving is helping children feel understood and supported,” she explains. “I work hard to create a calm, predictable environment where each child feels safe, seen, and valued.”
Her efforts extend beyond just the classroom. Families often express gratitude for the way Alexius connects with their children and makes them feel supported as parents navigating the world of early childhood development.
“They’d probably say I go the extra mile to connect with children on their level—and that I never give up on helping them grow.”
Community Builder and Culture Champion
Alexius’s impact isn’t limited to her students. At Easterseals Arkansas, she’s also a champion of workplace culture. As a leader of the staff-led Morale Corral team, she helps foster an environment of appreciation, positivity, and connection among colleagues.
“We focus on boosting team spirit and making sure everyone feels valued,” she shares. “I think when our staff feels supported, that love and care ripple outward to the families we serve.”
Her coworkers would agree—Alexius is the kind of teammate who makes the workplace feel like home. That spirit of connection earned her the title of Teacher of the Year in 2021, a well-deserved recognition of her passion, consistency, and heart-led approach to teaching.
The Heart of the Mission
As a teacher at the Little Rock Developmental Preschool, Alexius plays an integral role in the continuum of care at Easterseals Arkansas. Her students are often preparing to transition into more structured learning environments, including our Academy at Riverdale—a K–12 school for students with developmental disabilities.
In these early years, the foundation Alexius helps build is crucial. It’s where trust, communication, and self-confidence begin.
“There’s something incredibly special about seeing a child gain confidence in something they once struggled with,” she says. “Watching their personalities shine and celebrating their milestones—it inspires me every day.”
Outside the Classroom
When she’s not teaching, Alexius brings the same joy and creativity to her personal life. She loves crocheting, DIY projects, and thrifting adventures with friends. She also enjoys time at the gym, quiet moments of reflection, and unwinding with music and laughter.
“I talk to my plants and my fur-baby like they’re coworkers,” she laughs. “And I’ll never say no to a late-night snack run. Fuzzy socks and a cold Coke? That’s my version of self-care.”
Above all, Alexius is a woman who leads with kindness and purpose—someone who believes in the good of people, especially the littlest ones who need an extra hand to grow.
“I want to be remembered as someone who led with love, patience, and purpose. Someone who made others feel seen, valued, and supported.”
