At Easterseals Arkansas, our mission comes to life through the people who show up every day ready to support students and families with compassion, skill, and a belief in what’s possible. This week, we’re proud to spotlight Shawna Teague, Transition and Employment Specialist. Her work is rooted in advocacy, encouragement, and helping students recognize their own potential.
A Heart for Students, and a Passion for Making a Difference
Shawna joined Easterseals Arkansas because she wanted to keep doing what she loves, supporting students, while finding a healthier balance.
“I wanted to continue to make a difference in the lives of students but with less stress.”
She’s been with Easterseals Arkansas for a little over one year, and she brings additional experience from five and a half years teaching Special Education. That background helps her meet students where they are and guide them forward with confidence and care.
Built on Education and Expertise
Shawna’s academic journey reflects her commitment to inclusive learning and student support:
- Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education: University of Arkansas–Fort Smith
- Master’s degree in K-12 Special Education: University of Central Arkansas
Her training, combined with real-world classroom experience, helps her create learning environments where students feel seen, supported, and capable.
Strength in Advocacy and Student-Centered Problem Solving
One of Shawna’s standout strengths is her ability to advocate for students, especially those who may not have the tools or voice to advocate for themselves.
In her day-to-day work as a Transition and Employment Specialist, Shawna helps students reframe what success can look like, reminding them there are multiple pathways to a meaningful, independent future.
“They can be successful in any area that they choose. They don't have to go to college to be successful and that working can mean success also.”
That message is powerful: it respects each student’s goals, strengths, and individuality, while building practical confidence for life beyond the classroom.
Life Outside of Work: Family, Fitness, and Faith
When Shawna isn’t working with students, she’s spending time with what matters most to her: her family, the gym, and moments of reflection. These habits are what help her stay grounded and focused.
And if you catch her on a day off, she keeps it simple and relatable:
“On a day off, you will probably find me going to Raising Cane's, getting coffee and taking a nap.”
Arkansas Roots, and a Goal for the Future
Shawna is a proud Fort Smith native: raised there, still living there, and surrounded by family.
And while she loves her community, she shares a dream many Arkansans understand:
“We would love to live in the mountains with cooler weather, though.”
Determination Worth Celebrating
Shawna recently pushed herself in a big way: competing in two Spartan races, earning a completion medal for each. That determination shows up in her work too: steady effort, consistent follow-through, and a mindset that progress is always possible.
When asked what’s impossible to give up, she doesn’t hesitate: coffee and the gym.
The Legacy She Hopes to Leave
For Shawna, the legacy that matters most starts at home:
“I want to be remembered as loving my family with my whole heart.”
That same wholehearted care is something her students and coworkers benefit from every day.
Thank you, Shawna!
