At Easterseals Arkansas, the heartbeat of our mission lies in the dedication of our incredible team members—people who go above and beyond each day to help individuals with disabilities lead more independent, fulfilled lives. One of those exceptional people is Tammie Janean Silas, a compassionate Teaching Assistant at Children’s Rehabilitation Center, whose work has empowered clients for nearly 28 years.
A Passion for Lifelong Support and Compassionate Care
Tammie joined Easterseals’ Children’s Rehabilitation Center (CRC) in the Education Department in 1996, bringing with her a deep-rooted passion for caring inspired by her oldest brother, who has autism. Her love for him is the very heart of her family, and it's what has driven her commitment for decades.
Tammie has brought both education and hands-on expertise to her work, earning a Bachelor of Social Work degree from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. When she reflects on her career, she always comes back to the same feeling:
“Choosing Easterseals was one of the best decisions I've ever made.”
Making Connections Functional and Fun as a Teaching Assistant
Over the decades, Tammie has become known for her consistency, positivity, and a unique gift for peacemaking. At Easterseals, she is best known for her calming spirit and attentive listening ear, which create an environment where everyone feels safe to be themselves. Her ability to spread joy and foster authentic connections has made her an indispensable mentor and friend across the organization.
What truly sets Tammie apart is her ability to blend technical expertise with deep empathy. Her colleagues trust her because she listens. She adapts. And she genuinely cares.
From Small Town Roots to Little Rock
Tammie grew up in DeRidder, Louisiana, a place that helped shape her compassionate spirit. After graduating from DeRidder High School, she pursued her studies before earning her degree and eventually becoming a cornerstone of our Little Rock team.
Life Beyond Work: Family, Friendships, and Delicious Treats
When she’s not at CRC, Tammie finds joy in the little things: exploring local boutiques, savoring a delicious meal with friends, or simply indulging in some well-deserved “me time.” She is also a devoted volunteer, supporting events for individuals with disabilities.
And if you’re lucky enough to sample her legendary brownies—made with delicious dark fudge—you’ll understand why she bakes five pans a week to keep everyone smiling.
A Home for Hope: Working As a Teaching Assistant
Founded on the belief that everyone deserves the opportunity to live their best life, Easterseals Arkansas offers a range of programs that empower people with disabilities across the lifespan. For Tammie, working at Easterseals means being part of a team that’s truly committed to positive change.
It’s a community where people are treated with dignity and encouraged to reach their full potential.
“There’s one thing I could never give up: my work at CRC.”
Legacy and Impact: How Tammie Wants to Be Remembered
Tammie’s work as a Teaching Assistant leaves a lasting impact—not only on the clients she serves but on the Easterseals Arkansas team and community. She leads with compassion, acts with purpose, and never loses sight of why her work matters.
When she thinks about her legacy, she hopes to be remembered as a kind, humble, and compassionate soul who loves everyone.
