In a time of unprecedented change and uncertainty brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, Autism Ambassador Aaron Likens steps forward to share his experience and offer a hand to others navigating the same stormy seas.
Joining us at Easterseals Arkansas, Aaron, alongside our CEO Ron Ekstrand, opened up about his personal journey, giving us a glimpse into the world depicted in his book, Finding Kansas.
A Lifelong Quest for Routine
From an early age, even before his diagnosis of Asperger’s Syndrome at 20, Aaron was driven by a need for routine. The predictability of “What’s next?” offered a sanctuary, a comfort that eased the waves of anxiety. In his own words, knowing was a pillar, a constant that bestowed serenity amidst chaos.
With the world in the grasp of COVID-19, everyone’s life rhythm has been thrown off balance. Yet for those on the autism spectrum, the anxiety multiplies a hundredfold, a torrential downpour in an already stormy weather.
The abrupt closure of schools, the indeterminate hiatus on the norms we’ve grown accustomed to; all these changes stir a whirlpool of apprehension, a craving for the routine that once was.
Navigating Fear and Uncertainty
In these trying times, fear becomes an all-too-familiar companion. Aaron confesses that while he wishes for words to quell the fear, a part of him appreciates the silent understanding of his loved ones.
“You see, attempts at minimizing fears for those of us on the spectrum are likely just a one-way ticket to further anxiety and frustration,” Aaron shares, highlighting the importance of giving space to feelings, of honoring the fear without trivializing it.
Contrary to the misconceptions about individuals on the spectrum lacking imagination, Aaron describes it as a rich, albeit sometimes overwhelming, landscape. In his mind, scenarios unfold—one after another—creating a series of “what ifs” that can be both a source of insights and a trigger for anxiety. The current instability only fuels this imagination, setting off a chain reaction of apprehensions about what the future holds.
The Importance of Consistent Communication
In the face of uncertainty, Aaron underlines the critical role of steady and patient communication. Recalling his younger self, Aaron empathizes with those grappling with the disruption of their routine, especially the loss of school, a pillar of stability and a source of communication, albeit limited.
For parents, siblings, and guardians standing beside someone on the spectrum during this period, your understanding and consistency offer a much-needed anchor. While the storm of doubts and fears might be fierce, your unwavering presence forms a shelter, a haven amidst the swirling uncertainties.
Your willingness to patiently respond to repetitive questions, and to stand firm despite not having all the answers, offers reassurance. In a world fervently asking “What’s next?”, your steady presence echoes a comforting whisper, conveying that while the routine might be lost now, it is not lost forever.
“Being there for them in whatever way you can is almost as good as actually knowing the full answer to the question we are all wondering…” Aaron imparts with conviction, sharing the hopeful inquiry at the heart of many, “When can I have my routine back?”
